Transmission

Helix offers solutions for supporting, protecting, terminating and splicing transmissions lines. Further to our complete helical fitting line, we offer a full array of innovative motion control products designed to withstand severe weather conditions, as well as a wide range of conductor accessories built to be easy to install and reliable.

Armor Rods

Armor Rods are designed to protect conductors by reducing bending, compression, and abrasion at the support point, particularly where handties are used. Protection against flashover damage is also provided. Armor Rods are recommended as the minimum conductor protection for spans of 300-ft. (91m) or more.

When no more than 50% of the outside strands on an ACSR or Aluminum conductor have been damaged at the support point, Armor Rods may be used to repair damage, thereby restoring 100% of the rated conductance and strength.

Armor Rods may be tapped over; however, the use of an oxide inhibitor is recommended.

Armor Rods are available in two lengths: one for single support and one for double support if distance between the supports is 12 inches (30.5 cm) or less.

Line Guards

Line Guards are designed to protect conductors by reducing bending, compression and abrasive action to a minimum. Line Guards are recommended as the minimum conductor protection for spans of less than 300 ft. (91 m).

When no more than 25% of the outside strands of an ACSR or Aluminum Conductor have been damaged, thereby restoring 100% of rated conductance and strength.

Do not use Line Guards for repair at the support point.

Splices

Splices are designed to repair or connect guys and messenger strands or conductors. When properly applied, the splice will develop the full rated breaking strength of the conductor or strand manufactured to ASTM A.475 EHS or CSA G12 grade 180 specifications.

Splices are not intended to be reused once they have been installed. Splices for strand or conductor sizes not listed can be supplied on request.

Conductor Splices will restore original conductivity to all-aluminum, aluminum alloy, copper, and ACSR type conductors.

Full rated breaking strength will be restored to homogeneous stranded conductors. On ACSR, strength will be restored to all aluminum strands, but not the core. Scratch brushing is recommended on weathered conductors.

Vibration Damper

Controlling aeolian vibrations on overhead lines is a broad area of research, development and testing in which substantial technological progress has been achieved. This includes a new type of vibration damper developed by Hydro-Québec’s research institute.

Marketed since early 2002 by the licensee, Helix Uniformed, this patented technology attenuates aeolian vibrations of conductors and is more robust than other damper models. It was developed by redesigning the spacer-damper’s articulated structure to create a new damping mechanism combining two joints in one. This innovation reduces the damper’s unsuspended weight and cost, while making it more compact.

Since 2002, more than 25,000 Hydro-Québec vibration dampers have been installed on lines belonging to the company and to other utilities worldwide.

Spacer Damper

Spacer-dampers are used to counter wind-induced oscillations and vibrations —phenomena that may cause major damage to overhead lines. Finding that existing systems failed to dampen vibrations sufficiently, tended to age prematurely, and damaged conductors at the points of attachment, Hydro-Québec launched an R&D program. A new design of spacer-damper was developed in 1979 under that program.

The design features a novel articulated structure giving the spacer-dampers unequalled strength, and a flexible mechanism for attaching them to conductors using spiral armor rods. Recognized as effective, robust and providing protective conductor attachment, the new spacer-dampers have been installed on all new Hydro-Québec lines built since 1980. They have also been used to replace older models on the grid.

The system has helped the company make its lines more reliable and improve electrical service. Manufactured under licence by a number of companies both in Québec and abroad, the spacer-damper is marketed around the world and is now an international emblem of technical achievement for Hydro-Québec. More than 800,000 of these spacer-dampers have been installed on Hydro-Québec lines and elsewhere in the world.

Interphase Spacer

Suitable for single conductors and twin-conductor bundles, Hydro-Quebec interphase spacers combine exceptional strength and flexibility. To better counter the harmful effects of galloping on vertically set conductors, their unique design is customized according to the electrical, mechanical and environmental parameters of a customer's transmission line. While the Hydro-Quebec interphase spacer does not eliminate galloping, it successfully protects valuable transmission equipment by withstanding the compressive forces resulting from galloping without any buckling.
