Distribution (Guy Strand)

Helix offers a comprehensive line of factory-formed helical fittings for terminating, repairing and splicing messengers or guy strands for use on wood poles associated with distribution line construction. For guying transmission line structures, or for earth wire fittings, refer to the transmission section.

Armor Rods

Armor Rods are designed to protect conductors by reducing bending, compression, and abrasion at the support point, particularly where handties are used. Protection against flashover damage is also provided. Armor Rods are recommended as the minimum conductor protection for spans of 300-ft. (91m) or more.

When no more than 50% of the outside strands on an ACSR or Aluminum conductor have been damaged at the support point, Armor Rods may be used to repair damage, thereby restoring 100% of the rated conductance and strength.

Armor Rods may be tapped over; however, the use of an oxide inhibitor is recommended.

Armor Rods are available in two lengths: one for single support and one for double support if distance between the supports is 12 inches (30.5 cm) or less.

Splices

Splices are designed to repair or connect guys and messenger strands or conductors. When properly applied, the splice will develop the full rated breaking strength of the conductor or strand manufactured to ASTM A.475 EHS or CSA G12 grade 180 specifications.

Splices are not intended to be reused once they have been installed. Splices for strand or conductor sizes not listed can be supplied on request.

Conductor Splices will restore original conductivity to all-aluminum, aluminum alloy, copper, and ACSR type conductors.

Full rated breaking strength will be restored to homogeneous stranded conductors. On ACSR, strength will be restored to all aluminum strands, but not the core. Scratch brushing is recommended on weathered conductors.

Deadends

Guy Ends are designed for the guying of poles in the construction of power and communication lines.

Guy Ends are designed for use with standard guy strands one inch diameter or less, produced to ASTM A.475 or CSA G12 specifications. Both Guy Ends and the guy strand itself have a left-hand lay.

Requirements for Guy Ends for strands other than those described above should be referred to the factory.

Guy Ends develop the full rated strength of strands manufactured to ASTM A.475 Extra High Strength and CSA G12 grade 180 specifications.

Guy Ends may be removed and reapplied twice after initial installation to retension guys strands.

Should it become necessary to remove a Guy End after it has been installed for a period of three months, it should be replaced with a new Guy End.

Links

Guy Links are designed for the guying a wrap around guy at the pole in the construction of power and communication lines. Guy Links are designed for use with standard guy strands one inch diameter or less, produced to ASTM A.475 or CSA G12 specifications. Both Guy Links and the guy strand itself have a left-hand lay. Requirements for Guy Links for strands other than those described above should be referred to the factory.

Guy Links develop the full rated strands to ASTM A.475 Extra High Strength and CSA G12 grade 180 specifications.

Guy Links may be removed and reapplied after initial installation to retension guys strands. Should it become necessary to remove a Guy Link after it has been installed for a period of three months, it should be replaced with a new Guy Link.

Guy Links are not designed for splicing. Splices are covered in section 50000.
